THE STORY
Charaka Samhita, c. 400 BCE
“Sleep is the nurse of all living beings. When one sleeps well, the body and mind are nourished like a field watered at the right hour.”
Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana XXI
The classical formulation of Nidrā draws from the Charaka Samhita's chapter on Nidra-vijnana (the science of sleep), where Charaka enumerates six types of sleep and prescribes herbal interventions for Anidra (insomnia). The combination of Ashwagandha root and Jatamansi rhizome appears in multiple Bhaishajya texts as a first-line treatment for Vata-driven sleeplessness.
