THE STORY
Ashtanga Hridaya, c. 600 CE
“When Agni is strong, the body thrives; when Agni diminishes, the body decays. Therefore, one must tend the fire within as a priest tends the sacred flame.”
Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana XII
Vagbhata's Ashtanga Hridaya devotes an entire chapter to Agni—the digestive fire—classifying it into thirteen sub-types. The combination of Ginger (Ardraka) and Triphala appears in his Deepaniya Gana (fire-kindling group), prescribed as the foundational formula for Mandagni (slow digestion).
