THE STORY
Bhavaprakasha, c. 1500 CE
“Medhya herbs sharpen the intellect as a whetstone sharpens a blade—not by adding to it, but by removing what dulls.”
Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, Guduchyadi Varga
The four Medhya Rasayanas—Brahmi, Shankhpushpi, Mandukaparni (Gotu Kola), and Yashtimadhu—were classified by Charaka himself. Bhavamishra later expanded the cognitive materia medica, noting Pudina (Mint) as a synergist that 'opens the channels of the mind' for the primary nootropics.
